WHAT IS A PROSTHODONTIST?
As per the Australian Dental Board, Prosthodontics is defined as a branch of dentistry that deals with the restoration and maintenance of oral health, function and appearance by reconstruction of the natural teeth, or the replacement of missing teeth and contiguous oral and maxillofacial tissues with substitutes.
The Academy of Australian and New Zealand Prosthodontists reports that there are about 1,600 dental specialists in Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately, many patients are unaware that dental specialists exist. In total, there are 13 dental specialities, each focusing on a specific area of oral care.
You've no doubt heard of Orthodontists but what about the others? What reasons would you have to visit a dental specialist? Prosthodontists complete a minimum extended study of three years with a recognised institute in Australia to be able to be registered as a prosthodontist. This makes them experts in their focused field of Dentistry.
Your general dentist may refer you to our prosthodontists, or you may wish to see us for an opinion regarding your problem. As a specialist, our prosthodontists manage more challenging and complex cases, although this is not always the case. Think about seeing our specialists at iProsthodontist if you are considering extensive and advanced dental treatment.
